Princess Gowramma’s story is one of the most tragic chapters of British colonial rule in India.
The daughter of Chikka Virarajendra, the last Raja of Coorg, she was taken to London as a child and held as a political pawn.
Queen Victoria personally oversaw her conversion to Christianity, renamed her ‘Victoria Gowramma’, and tried to use her to promote conversions among Indians.
Stripped of her faith, culture, and freedom, Gowramma died in loneliness at just 23.
